Description
Calea Zacatechichi is a heavily branching shrub that is native to the high altitude cloudforests in a small area of the southern Mexican sierra. The Chontal indians make a tea from the crushed leaves. They call the plant by the name of "Thle-pelakano" which means " leaf of the god". The Chontal medicine men believe in visions seen in dreams and say Calea 'clarifies the senses'.
PROPERTIES
There are also reports of the dried leaves being smoked as cigarettes to induce "visions and clairvoyant, dream-like states in which they often perceived voices of the gods and spirits who reveal the cause of diseases, decipher the future or maybe help find lost objects. Scientifically demonstrated to increase the frequency of lucid dreams." (Gnostic Garden)
CULTIVATION
Calea is a relatively hardy plant although may require some protection from frost/freezes.
