Ginkgo Biloba, sometimes know as the Maidenhair tree is thought to be the oldest living tree species, fossil records of the Ginkgo species have been dated back to 270 million years ago. It was quite widespread for a long time and fossil records have shown it appearing in what is now Europe, Asia and North America. About 7 million years ago the Ginkgo disappeared from the fossil record of North America. It was gone from Europe by about 2.5 million years ago, and scientists thought it was extinct until the german physician and botanist Engelbert Kaempfer discovered it in Japan. The Ginkgo's had survived in China where they had been cultivated in palace and temple gardens ( for its medicinal benefits )from approximatly 1100 AD and then spread to Japan around 1192AD. The tree has since spread into europe and america in the early 1700's.
