Description
Ocotea pretiosa or commonly known as Brazilian Sassafras is one of several sources that contain safrole in its essential oil ( Sassafras oil ). This is harvested from the trunkwood of the tree. Sassafras oil contains 80% or more of Safrole.
Sassafras oil was formerly used in numerous household fragrance applications such as floor waxes, polishes, soaps, detergents and cleaning agents. Its ability to blend with other oils and its powerful masking properties made it valuable for such purposes. Its principal use today is as a source of heliotropin, used as a flavouring and fragrance agent, and piperonal butoxide (PBO), an ingredient of pyrethroid insecticides.
Safrole has been found to be toxic/carcinogenic in laboratory animals producing cancer and liver and kidney defects. It has been banned by various goverments. It's oral use is NOT recommended.
