Description
Passionflower is a woodyvine with intricate blue, purple, red or white flowers. Spanish missionaries gave it the name 'Passion flower because they thought the flowers represented some of the objects associated with the crucifixtion of Christ, the 3 stamens represent his wounds, and the 12 petals represent the apostles.
Passiflora has both edible and medicinal uses. Several species have been domesticated for production of their edible fruit that can be eaten raw or cooked in jams and jellies.
Indiginous tribes throughout the Amazon use Passionflower leaves for its sedative and pain relieving properties; the fruit is used as a heart tonic and to calm coughs. Indeed Passiflora has been the subject of much scientific research, it's pain relieving, sedative and antispasmodic effects have all been established and in the 1980's it's anti-anxiety and hypotensive actions were clinically validated.
