Kola nut

Description

Kola nuts are the seed pods of various evergreen. The kola nut trees ,which grow as tall as 60 feet are most common in Western Africa and the Atlantic coast of Central Africa. These are also known as Gurru/Guru Nuts and Blissy Nuts.

Kola nuts are important in many African societies, particularly Western Africa. Kola nuts contain caffeine and can act as a stimulant. They are also thought to reduce fatigue and hunger and aid digestion as well as having aphrodisiac properties.

In some parts of Africa, kola nuts are given as gifts to visitors entering a home, usually with some formal ceremony. Offering a kola nut is a gesture of friendship and hopitality. The kola nut ceremony is similar to the traditional Americal Indian peace pipe or breaking bread in a religious context.

Kola nuts have been consumed by breaking them open and into pieces, then chewing the kola nut as one chews gum. Most people find the taste very bitter. The stimulating effect is similar to a strong cup of coffee. Kola nut is a central nervous system stimulant. Historical uses of kola nut include increasing the capacity for physical exertion and for enduring fatigue without food, lack of emotion, nervous diarrhoea, depression, despondancy, anxiety and sea sickness.

Kola nuts are produced commercially in the African and American tropics. Kola nuts are best known outside of Africa as an ingredient in cola beverages. There is some evidence that the first kola (or cola) drink was made by Western Africans who mixed water with dried or fermented kola nuts. Commercially produced cola drinks were developed in the late 1800's, when chemists and inventors used kola nuts. The most famous of these is of course Coca-Cola which has become truly global. This, however is "The real thing" because American soft drinks are no longer flavoured with the kola nut. They use a petrochemical flavouring instead.
